Rose ~ More Than Just Beauty

Did you know the first rose, according to fossil evidence is 35 million (University of Illinois Extension, 2022) years old? The benefits of rose surpasses more than just its beauty and scent. In Ayurveda, rose is classified as a medicinal herb.



Variations


Rose may be utilized in numerous forms, such as: flower, water, oil, clay, and powder.



Rose

  • Pacifies Vata (energy of movement) and Pitta (energy of digestion or metabolism) Dosha imbalances

  • Has aphrodisiac properties

  • Petals have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and cooling properties

  • Petals promote wound healing

  • Petals are a great remedy for puffy eyes and dark circles

  • Tackles stress and fatigue, by calming your mind and boosting your mood (Ayurvedum, 2018).


Rose Water

  • May help scalp inflammation when used in shampoos

  • Helps with uplifting your senses

  • May treat acne, dandruff, burns, redness, and dryness (Ayurvedum, 2018).


Rose Essential Oil (Do NOT ingest)

  • May treat acne, dandruff, burns, redness, and dryness

  • Great for Aromatherapy, and as a massage oil for your neck, head, and back (Ayurvedum, 2018).

  • May stimulate brain to release endorphins/dopamine, aiding sexual drive

  • May relieve menstrual discomfort

  • May decrease anxiety, stress, and depression

  • May have antibacterial and antifungal properties (Stanborough, 2019).


Rose Kaolin Clay (not made from roses)

  • White & pink kaolin mix (white beneficial for sensitive skin and pink for oily skin)

  • Able to penetrate and may aid in repairing damaged skin

  • Silica (collagen production enhancer) may aid in stronger/healthier skin, and promote cell renewal

  • May reduce acne and blemishes

  • Rich in minerals (magnesium, selenium, zinc and iron, to name a few) and has a neutral pH balance

  • May prevent cracking, scaliness, and irritation by locking in natural moisture

  • Has anti-inflammatory benefits for skin inflammations (eczema, psoriasis, cellulitis, etc.) and blackheads

  • Exfoliant for dead skin; may aid in drawing oils and toxins out skin (Braun, 2021).


Rose Powder

  • Rich in antioxidants

  • Has anti-inflammatory properties, may be useful for skin conditions (acne, eczema, etc.)

  • Cleanses, tones, and tightens skin, possibly slowing down the aging process

  • May fight free radicals, acne, excess sebum (oil), and germs with antioxidants

  • May increase hair growth

  • Vitamin C may stimulate collagen production, aiding in skin imperfections (Whyte, 2022).


Rosehip Powder

  • Known to have medicinal properties since 23-79 BC

  • Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, like polyphenols and carotenoids

  • May stimulate the synthesis and restoration of collagen

  • May be effective in reducing arthritis inflammation and associated pain

  • May be helpful in promoting longevity of cell membranes and healthy skin (Phetcharat, Wongsuphasawat, & Winther, 2015).


Warnings/Side Effects


PLEASE USE CAUTION: Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider BEFORE utilizing rose, as it may have an adverse hormonal or menstrual effect (Staughton, 2020). ALWAYS do a small patch test on your skin BEFORE utilizing any new products, to check for skin sensitivities/allergies.
